Grand Am Starter Replacement
Q. How do you remove starter out of 1988 Pontiac Grand Am 2.3 liter motor 16 valve?
Thank you...
A. Here's it what you have to do:
- Disconnect battery ground cable, then disconnect throttle body to air cleaner duct.
- Disconnect electrical connectors from throttle position switch, idle air control valve and manifold absolute pressure sensor.
- Disconnect vacuum harness from intake manifold.
- Disconnect manifold absolute pressure sensor vacuum line from intake manifold, then remove cooling fan shroud attaching bolts and shroud.
- Remove radiator upper support.
- Disconnect electrical connector from engine cooling fan. Rotate fan attaching bracket until the two lower bracket legs are facing upward, then move fan motor toward driver's side of vehicle and lift from engine compartment. CAUTION: Because of low clearance, special care must be taken not to damage the lock tang on the throttle position switch with the fan bracket.
- Disconnect wiring harness retaining clip from engine mount bracket stud.
- Remove starter motor retaining bolts, then tilt starter motor toward radiator and pull outward to gain access to wiring. CAUTION: Take care not to damage the crank sensor mounted directly to the rear of the starter. If it is damaged, it must be replaced.
- Disconnect electrical wiring from starter motor and remove starter from vehicle.
- Reverse procedure to install.
