Jeep Wrangler Idles Rough

Q. Vincent, I have a 1990 Jeep Wrangler Islander It is an automatic, 6 cylinder with a carburetor. The engine and transmission have been rebuilt. I don't really have problems with starting the vehicle but I have problems with it dying. This, at times, happens when I first get it started but more often when I idle in drive at an intersection or I have just slowed down after running at a higher speed on the highway for five to twenty minutes.

A. There are many reasons for this to happen. You could have a fouled O2 sensor. The Throttle Position Sensor (TPS), Coolant Temperature Sensor (CTS), Manifold Pressure/Vacuum Sensor (MAP) or Idle Speed Stepper Motor (IAC) could be bad.

It could also be due to a partially clogged fuel injector, low fuel pressure or a vacuum leak. Some testing will have to be done to locate the problem.
