Mercury Sable CEL And ABS Light

Q. I have a 1996 Mercury Sable LS. It has a 3.0-liter Duratec DOHC engine, ABS brakes and an automatic transmission. The car has 127,853 miles on it and runs great. But I just got home from college (the car was sitting while I was gone for about four months) and I turn the car on and the ABS light came on and stayed on.

Mercury Sable CEL And ABS Light

So now every time I start the car the ABS light comes on and stays on, I tried restarting the car to see if it would turn off, like the manual says but no luck. Then after about a week I was driving and the Service engine light came on and then that light stayed on every time I started the car and drove, so I unplugged the battery and waited a while then plugged it back and now the Service engine light is off but the ABS is still on. Any ideas?

Thanks for the help,
Parnell

A. The ABS and Check Engine Light are telling you something is wrong and that they have stored DTCs in their respective computers. You will need a scan tool to pull the DTCs for both these symptoms. Once we have the codes we can work from there. Most large auto parts stores will pull the codes for you for free.
