Possessed Pontiac Grand AM
Q. I purchased a 1992 Pontiac Grand AM GT about two months ago (my first car). It's an automatic, fuel injected, and has 200,000 (124,274 miles) kilometers on it. I have a slight problem with it, lets hope it's slight anyway. When idling, the RPMS jump From 1,000 RPM's to about 1,500 RPM's, and occasionally it will rev up to 2,000 RPM's when just started.
It's as if someone is pressing on the gas, and it is very annoying. The guy at the dealership told me it had to do with A/C, but it didn't. It was charged and it still does it. I also heard it just needs cleaning. Could that be it? Also, the car shakes excessively as soon as you go over 100 (62 mph) km/h. Could that be because it is in need of a wheel alignment?
Thanks,
AngA. The idle problem sounds like it could be a vacuum leak, possibly need to clean throttle body and IAC valve and re-teach the idle with a scan tool. As for the shake, it could be tire balance or a shifted belt in a tire. Possibly loose tie rod ends.
