Stalling Camero
Q. Hi Vincent, I have a 1991 Chevy Camaro RS, V-6 automatic transmission, and like 55,000 miles on it. It was running fine a couple of days ago, then I started it up this morning and it was missing a little bit, so I put fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank and filled it up.
Later on I realized a lot of power loss and when I stop I'd have to rev it up to keep it from stalling.
Then it was stalling all the time. To go I would have to rev it up really high. Now it's to the point that we start it up and it might idle for like a minute or two then stalls again. When I push on the gas it doesn't do anything in time to keep it from stalling. Got any ideas?
Thanks a lot, I appreciate your help.
JeremiahA. There are a number of reasons, fuel related and electrical, why an engine will stall as you described.
First thing to do is make sure the basics are good. New spark plugs, ignition wires, distributor cap and rotor and a new fuel filter. The key to successful troubleshooting is to have a good foundation on which to work. This could very well fix the problem, especially the fuel filter.
If the problem still occurs, then I would take the Idle Air Control Valve (IACV) out and give it, and the intake passages, a good cleaning with carburetor cleaner.
If the problem persists, then you'll need to check the fuel pump pressure and volume. It's possible there is junk in the fuel tank clogging the pump intake screen.
