Ford Windstar Cruise Control Switches

Q. Hi Vince, I have a question about my car.

  • 1999 Ford Windstar
  • 3.8 liter
  • 100,000 miles
  • Automatic transmission
  • ABS brakes
  • P/S, A/C and Cruise control
Ford Windstar Cruise Control Switches

I have faulty Cruise control function switches. I have tested it down to the switches, which does surprise me. I need to be able to remove them from the steering wheel. My steering wheel does not have a floating horn pad and I think it is unique to the 1999s and 2000s.

I was able to remove the wheel and I could see the backs of the switches but the only screw I saw was very difficult to get to (It was a torx) and I only saw one. I did not see one on the other side for the on/off switches and I do not feel that one screw is enough.

Of course they are hidden if they are there. I thought that maybe this screw was to disassemble the switch assembly once removed and I would find others. How do I remove the switches?

Thanks...

A. Here you go. It's a lot easier than it looks.

REMOVAL:
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.

  1. Pry the speed control actuator switch out of the steering wheel. CAUTION: When separating the speed control actuator switch from the steering wheel, it is necessary to take precautions not to damage the steering wheel. NOTE: Standard actuator switch shown, optional actuator switch similar.

    1. Disconnect the speed control actuator switch electrical connector.
    2. Remove the speed control actuator switch.

INSTALLATION:
  1. To install, reverse the removal procedure. NOTE: When the battery is disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 10 miles or more to relearn its strategy.
