Ford Probe Muffler And Flex Pipe Q. Mr. Vincent Ciulla, I drive a 1994 Ford Probe SE 4-cylinder manual transmission. Recently I had the car's exhaust looked through. The mechanic told me that the muffler need to be changed, I did see a big hole on it, and the mesh pipe might need to be replaced as well. However, it will cost me nearly $200.00 ONLY for the muffler.

I looked eBay, some nice stainless mufflers are bidded for just $40.00 to $50.00. Do you think the mechanic cheated on me? For muffler and mesh pipe, how much it usually cost for, including parts and labor?

A. Well, a new muffler from Ford will cost, in the neighborhood, of $390.00 so that makes $200.00 a little bit easier to take.

This is something that's fairly easy to shop around for. I would call around to places like Midas, Meineke or National muffler and see who has the best price. They all offer the same warranty.

The flex pipe will probably be a dealer item. I don't have a price or part number for it available.
