Prelude Transmission Noise

Q. Problem: There is pedal vibration and a "rough feeling" and a "verrrrr" noise when upshifting around 3-4,000 rpms from 1st to 2nd; 2nd to 3rd; 3rd to 4th.The gears never grind and the gear I'm it never pops out.

No noise when clutch is engaged. The clutch doesn't slip (ever). The dealer replaced the entire clutch and resurfaced the flywheel without success. The clutch dampener was replaced without success. The problem is now becoming noticeable during clutch disengagement during downshifts as well. No problems shifting around 5000 rpm or higher.

The dealer and I agree that there are no transmission fluid leaks. The clutch was silky smooth up until 34,000 miles. I am going to take this car to another dealer since they admit they do not know what is wrong. They can feel and hear the same problem I do when they test drive it.

1998 Honda Prelude SH
15 speed
Miles 36,600
16 valve 2.2 liter I4 with 195 hp

Thanks for any assistance.

A. The only thing I was able to find on this transmission is a TSB number 00-054 issued on 12/19/00. It referred to a "buzzing" noise from the transmission. The fix is a countermeasure clutch disc, P/N 22200-PCX-025, H/C 6521678. The bulletin also says: "If customers request the countermeasure clutch disc, advise them that the countermeasure clutch disc will initially allow more noise than a new original disc, but over time, the noise should not get noticeably worse.

It also says the noise is being caused by the backlash in the transmission gears and is normal and sometimes audible.

I don't know how this would apply to your particular car, but it is worth investigating. Perhaps Honda would be willing to install a new transmission to see if that will correct the problem.
