Stalling Pontiac Firebird
Q. Dear Sir, My name is Johnny and I have a 1986 Pontiac Firebird 2.8 liter multi-port fuel injected V-6, with an automatic transmission. The car has currently 100,075 miles, ABS brakes and rack and pinion steering. Now the problem I'm having is I have replaced the alternator, the distributer cap and rotor, spark plugs and spark plug cables, the battery, the fuel pump and screen, the fuel filter and the fuel injectors and changed the oil.
When I start the car and I idle, it starts to run rough. If I'm driving and come to a stop, the car dies or even switching from park to drive it sill dies. I have checked the hoses, belts any thing I could think of. Please help even my usual mechanic is dumfounded!
Johnny
A. You need to start with the basics. Timing, spark, fuel pressure or compression. Vacuum leaks, slightly opened EGR valve. There are a lot of things that could cause your problem but don't overlook the basic engine. The intake gaskets used to leak internal on these creating a vacuum leak into the crankcase. Spraying carburetor cleaner into oil fill hole will make it run better if the intake is leaking.
