Step Clutch?
Q. I'm changing the clutch on my Isuzu impulse and this is the first time I've ever changed a clutch. The instructions that came with my clutch kit say that step type clutches must be resurfaced according to the car manufacturers specs.
Unfortunately, the instructions do not say whether the clutch provided is a step type or not. So what is a step type clutch, how do I know if I've got one, and how do I get it resurfaced if I need to?
Thanks,
DavidA. You kind of got me here Dave, I have never heard of a step type clutch. That doesn't mean it doesn't exist, it just means I have never heard of it. I did some research on it and I could find no reference to it in any Isuzu service or repair manual. I also checked my database of TSB's and there is no mention of it there either.
I have done quite a few clutch replacements on Isuzu and I have never run into it. I have bought clutch kits for the Isuzu and I haven't even seen that instruction. I suspect what you have is a general instruction that they put in all of their clutch kits and it doesn't apply to you.
As for resurfacing a clutch disc, well 25 years ago some said it was a good idea along with arcing brake shoes, but today I don't know of anybody who does it.
I think you'll be okay just putting the new disc in as is. Just sand the faces with some coarse sandpaper and you'll be fine.
