Chevy Lumina Is Stalling At Stops

Q. Dear Sir, While searching for information about an ongoing problem I am having with my 1992 Chevy Lumina, I found your web site and wondered if you can help me. First of all, I am not a mechanic nor do I have much knowledge about repairing a car. I have had my car in and out of the local Pep Boys shop for a number of months and they can't seem to find the problem. I was hoping you could steer me in another direction or shed some light on the problem.

Problem: Several months ago, I had my car towed in for service because the engine was missing and idling very roughly. There was a strong smell of gasoline which I hadn't noticed before. The mechanics worked on the car, told me it was fixed, but when I went to drive it home, it was still doing the same thing.

After returning to Pep Boys, I was told there was a problem with my catalytic convertor and they put on a new one? I was also told that if I had continued to drive the car, it would have caught on fire. I don't know if this is so or not. Several times, the car has been back in and I'm now told they can't duplicate the problem.

I'm told there are no "codes" showing so they don't know what to do next. The car idles badly, although at times it is fine, and continues to miss on occasion. I don't drive the car on a regular basis, but rely on it to run errands, etc.

The last two times I've taken it on the freeway, it stalls out either after I've had to stop at the bottom of the ramp for a light, or about the first time I really have to come to a stop. The car also doesn't seem to have the pick-up it used to have when on the highway.

I realize you probably need much more information before you can offer any help. If you could tell me what you need to know, or tell me where to get this information, I would be very grateful. I am on a very limited income and need any help you can possibly give.

A. Let me see if I have the problem. The car will stall or shut off after coming to a stop when driving at speeds over 45 mph. If this is correct, have Manny, Moe and Jack disconnect your Torque Convertor Clutch TCC solenoid wire.

This would be a plug on the front side of transmission. It sounds like your Torque Convertor Clutch inside the transmission may be sticking on when warm and driven over speeds of 45 mph. Unplugging this plug would stop this from happening. Then if your problems are gone, you can decide whether or not to fix it.
