Dodge Brake Vibration

Q. I sometimes experience a vibration in my steering wheel while braking. I have a 2000 Dodge Dakota with 29,500 miles. The dealer replaced the rotors free of charge at 12,000 miles, and this took care of problem for awhile. I don't understand why it goes through periods where it vibrates while braking, and then at other times, I don't notice it. I get my tires rotated & balanced every 6,000 miles.

Thanks,
Rob

A. Besides the front rotors being warped, the only other thing that will cause this problem is the front wheels being torqued too tight. This will distort the rotors and shortly cause the vibration you are feeling. Technicians usually tighten the lug nuts with an impact gun and they can put about 150 foot pounds of torque on a wheel. For a Dodge I use a torque wrench to tighten the wheel lugs to 95 foot pounds. If you have steel wheels, the torque is 90 foot pounds.
