Souping Up A Ford F-150 5.0 Liter
Q. I have a 1992 Ford F-150. I really like my truck, but the stock 302 is a little under-powered for what I need it to pull. Recently I have done a few things to try and pep it up a little bit. I removed the catalytic power restriction in the exhaust system and installed a three inch exhaust and Flowmaster muffler.
I also installed a K&N high flow air filter and tossed the stock air filtration system. This all seemed to help, but not a lot like I had hoped. I was looking through Jegs and saw a Mass Air conversion kit for my particular truck. It claimed that this was my answer and should be done before any other modifications. Is this true, and should I consider doing this? Also, would roller rockers be a good investment and increase in H.P.?
Sincerely,
CaseA.
I'm not really into modifications. That is a job for specialized speed shops. I also don't have any personal experience with performance kits like the MAF kit you mentioned. One thing I do know, buying horsepower is expensive.Since money doesn't seem to be a problem and you already broke Federal Law by removing the catalytic converter, I would say go for it. I don't know what it will do or how much H.P. it will add to justify the $550.00 cost, but if it doesn't perform as advertised, you can try and get your money back.
Roller lifters will help some, but I don't think it will help enough to justify the expense of buying and installing $200.00 worth of lifters and. But if money is not a problem, go for it.
But before I go spending any money, I would visit a speed shop that specializes in Fords and talk to them. They will be better able to advise you on what works and what doesn't. Just make sure the person who helps you doesn't work on commission.
Personally, I think the money could be better spent putting a low milage 351 used engine in the truck. That will give you a 35 H.P. jump by itself.
