Cadillac Coupe Deville Cruise Control

Q. Hi again Vince. Thanks for answering my last question, I have another one that I hope you can help me with.

  • 1980 Cadillac Coupe Deville
  • 6.0 liter V-8, four barrel carburetor
  • Automatic transmission
Cadillac Coupe Deville Cruise Control

My question: When I turn on my cruise control and lock in my speed, the car speeds up, then coasts, speeds up, then coast, speeds up, then coasts, etc. What is the problem and is it a complex problem to fix?

Thanks again for your time, looking forward to hearing from you. Your very helpful.
Laurent

A. This is usually caused by a misadjusted cruise control actuator chain. This chain goes from the cruise control actuator to the throttle linkage. I would try adjusting it before doing anything else.

A combination of cable and bead chain is used. Install the cable into the throttle clip and lock into position. Chain should be taut with the throttle body lever in the hot idle position and idle speed solenoid fully retracted. Place the bead into the swivel, then install the retainer and lock into place. Chain slack should not exceed one half the diameter of ball stud. Cut off excess chain.

And don't forget, this is a Cadillac, everything is four times more complex than it has to be.
