Explorer Trans Noise

Q. I have a 1996 Ford Explorer, which I just got back from the dealer's service dept. To make a long story short, we brought the car to them to have a 60,000 maintenance done and they bent the engine rod. It took them 6 rebuilt engines and 4 months to get us an engine that didn't leak oil.

We just got the car back, and one hour later the transmission is missing and grinding badly. They told us that they didn't touch the transmission, that it is just a coincidence.

Do you know of anything they could have done that messed up our transmission? When we brought them the car originally, it was PERFECT, never a problem. It was just supposed to be a maintenance visit.

Please let me know your suggestions. I appreciate your time.

A. Wow, sounds like you've been through the wringer on this truck.

It could be a coincidence, but it sounds like maybe they left the flywheel or torque converter bolts loose. That would explain the symptoms you are experiencing. If you take it to an independent shop and have it checked, they could confirm this and then you would have the documentation you need to go back to Ford and say "You guys messed up."
