Grand AM Clunking And Thumping

Q. I am experiencing terrible problems with my brakes. I have had the rotors machined, new pads, but within a month of service I experience a terrible clunking and a hard thump causing me almost a whiplash when the brakes are applied at slow speeds, especially when I have driven 20 or more miles and the car has warmed up.

Grand AM Clunking And Thumping

My ASE mechanic has never seen this problem before and is at his wits end. Any suggestions???? Please?

  • 1997 Grand AM SE
  • 3.1 liter fuel injected V-6
  • Automatic transmission
  • 87,000 miles
  • ABS brakes
  • P/S, A/C, Cruise control

I appreciate your time.

Sincerely,
Marty
Arroyo Grande, CA

A. You are telling me that this mechanic "installed" this problem when he did your brakes, right? Possibly the wheels hitting the calipers due to incorrect clearances? Possibly too much lateral runout on the rotors or drums. Leave it with them to fix it.
