Thank you,

Ford Tempo Rear Main Seal

A. Piece of cake Andrea, here's what to do:

  1. Relieve fuel pressure.
  2. Remove transaxle from vehicle.
  3. Remove flywheel from engine.
  4. Remove rear cover plate.
  5. Using a suitable tool, punch a hole into the seal metal surface between the lip and block. Using jet plug remover T77L-9533-B, or equivalent, remove seal.
  6. Reverse procedure to install. Tighten flywheel bolts to 73-87 Nm (54-64 ft lb).

Make sure the seal goes in straight and true. Otherwise you'll have a leak. A touch of oil spread on the outside of the new seal will let it slide in easier. Oh, I'm assuming it's a 2.3 liter. If it's a V-6, there is a special tool, T82L-6701-A, to install the new seal.
