Transmission Temperature

Q. I have a RV with a Chevy 454 and a turbo 400 transmission. I just installed a big transmission cooler and a temperature gauge. What should the temp be at cruising speed? I was told the cooler the better and 180 degrees is ideal. Any help would be great.

Thanks,
Dave

A. There is no specification for transmission operating temperature, but it is usually accepted that it be the same as the engine operating temperature. So if the normal operating temperature of the engine is 180°, the transmission temperature should be 180°. You don't want to keep the transmission too cool since, like your engine, it is designed to operate within a certain temperature range.
