Pontiac Grand AM DRL's And ABS
Q. Hi Vincent, I have been reading all the advice you gave to others and decided to ask you for one about my car. I have a 1997 Pontiac Grand AM, 2.4 liter DOHC. The odometer reads about 59.000 miles right now. The car is equipped with automatic lights and Daytime Running Lights (DRL).
But recently I have been having a problem: when I start the engine all the lights and the instrument panel lights go on as normal except the DRLs (or headlights if it's dark outside). Could you please advise me on where I should look for the problem?
I checked the fuses already and they are all okay. Another problem I have is with ABS light which comes on when I drive for a few yards. Sometimes it doesn't come on right away, but if I brake or turn the steering wheel it lights up. If you can please give me any advice on these I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you very much, Eugene
A. DRL's will need the factory diagnostic chart to figure it out. It is a very complicated system. There could be a bad diode somewhere but the trouble is where? As for the ABS light, there will be a code set in the ABS system. This will tell you your problem. Possibly a missing wheel speed sensor reading on one or more wheels due to a broken wire to the sensor or a bad sensor. You need to get codes first which involves a scanner.
You can get the diagnostic chart in the Motors Manual at the Public Library or from Alldata.
