Questions and Answers

ABS Light

Q. The anti-lock indicator light comes on when I start the car, remains on for a few seconds and then goes out. I am assuming this is normal. While the light is off, the ABS works properly. Every once in a while, the light comes on, while the car is running, and at that time, the ABS stops working.

In other words, if I apply the brakes and it is slippery, while the light remains lit, the ABS does not work. I don't feel the pumping of the brakes and the car tends to slide out of control. Is there a problem that I need to be aware of? If so, what is it?

A. It is normal for the ABS light to come on for a few seconds and turn off when the key is first turned on. This is a self-diagnostic and bulb check.

If the light comes on while driving, then the system has detected a fault, turned on the light to let you know and stored a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). Your dealer will be able to access the control module and pull up the DTCs and repair the problem.
