Pontiac Grand Prix DTC P1404
Q. I have a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix GT 3800 V-6 (naturally aspirated, bone stock) with 70,000 miles on it, and the check engine light is on. I hooked a scanner up to it and it gave me a code P1404 which is an EGR closed position performance code. I replaced the part, but it didn't do anything. It falls flat on it's face at 4,000 rpms and makes a rattle from underneath the car.
Also, in the stored history codes, it shows a misfire in cylinder 6 has occurred twice. The SES light has flashed at me once before, which I know is really bad. Could I possibly have a bad spark plug/wire, or is it something more serious? I don't want to spend the $100.00 to have the dealer look at it, so any insight you may have would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time...
A. You may need to see the Dealer. I know for a fact that Chevy has a bulletin out for a "reflash" for this code. Pontiac may as well. A misfire can be caused by a bad wire or plug. Try checking the wires by pulling them off the coils one at a time. If any have corrosion on the terminals, replace them all.
