Pontiac 6000 Won't Down Shift

Q. I have a 1990 Pontiac 6000 with automatic transmission, 3.1 liter V-6, multi port fuel injection, A/C, cruise control, P/S. mileage is 150,000. The problem is that it won't go into passing gear, I step on the gas but nothing happens. It feels like its not getting gas so I replaced the gas filter just to be sure but that didn't help.

It seems to shift okay otherwise, it just won't go into passing gear, almost feels like it bogs down when you try to go into passing gear. Thank you for any help you can give me.

Thanks again,
Howard

A. It sounds like you may have a broken or misadjusted Throttle Valve (TV) cable.

I sent you a picture of the cable adjuster. To make the adjustment:

  1. Depress and hold metal lock tab.
  2. Move slider back through fitting in direction away from throttle idler lever until slider stops against fitting, then release lock tab.
  3. Rotate throttle idler lever to full travel stop position to set automatic cable adjuster on cable to correct setting, then release throttle idler lever.

If the cable is not broken or adjusted properly, then the problem is with the throttle valve inside the transmission valve body.
