Stripping Old Paint

Q. Dear Sir, I am looking for advice as to how best to remove the old paint out of the "grain pattern" from the interior panels of my car. I have a 1966 Mustang convertible and wish to keep intact the authentic texture Ford gave to the panels back in 1966.I hesitate using a sanding device fearing I may be smoothing the surface and losing the texture.

I also fear using a paint stripper in that I may be damaging the metal prior to repainting it. Any suggestions?

Thank you,
Tom

A. In addition to fixing cars and chasing women, I am an avid model railroader. I build and paint my model locomotives and I have to be careful to use something to strip the old paint without damaging the brass or plastic underneath it. Now don't laugh, but the paint stripper I use is ordinary brake fluid.

Brake fluid will take the paint off of metal and plastic without damage and it washes up with plain soap and water.
