200SX Croaked

Q. Sir, VEHICLE: 1986 Nissan 200 SX 2000cc engine, Automatic trans. over 100,000 miles but previous owner says he rebuilt the engine. Recent repair-replace alternator in late fall 2000. (purchased-Summer 2000)

My problem began recently when my wife was driving her car and it suddenly quit on her. It would not start and almost all electrical functions were not working. We went back to the car, after she got a ride home, and the car started. She drove it for about a mile and it quit again. I tried to start the car and there was very little electrical function and not enough power to turn the engine over. We towed the car home and let it sit in the garage a few days (it was raining the day the car quit and I wanted to rule out moisture as the culprit), I charged the battery also. I tried to start the car and the engine turned over well but did not start. I checked for a spark by removing the spark plug and then reattaching the spark plug wire-it did spark. I replaced the plug and tried to start the car, no luck. I removed a spark plug and it seemed to be almost wet with gasoline.

Any advice/information/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanking you in advance,
Brian

A. That engine has had problems with bad ignition modules. I must have replaced hundreds of them. What will happen is when they get hot, they stop working. When they cool down, they start working again. When they die, trying to restart the engine results in engine flooding, especially if the spark plugs are old.

Clean the spark plugs, or better yet, replace them with NGK BPR6ES-II spark plugs and it should start right up. When it does, close the hood and let it get hot. After 30 minutes or so, tap on the side of the distributor with a small hammer (not a definitive test, but it does work most of the time). If it dies, replace the ignition module. If it doesn't, drive it around until it does. When it dies, check for spark. If there is none, replace the module. The correct OEM part number is 22020-D3300.
