Subaru Cooling Fans
Q. Hi, my problem remain unsolved even by my habitual dealer. I have a Subaru Legacy 1993 4 doors with A/C and 4 wheel drive. As soon as we put the car key to ON, the cooling fans of radiator runs. They never stop even when I start the car at -15 C in winter. I've change the thermoswitch and the fans are always running again. How can I resolve this?
Thanks,
Luc from MontrealA. If the Subaru Dealer can not find the problem, and they have the car in front of them, I don't know how much help I can be. It is a fairly simple system.
A signal from the ECU controls the radiator fan relay and thus the radiator cooling fan. The ECU calculates inputs from the coolant temperature sensor and vehicle speed sensor to determine when to energize the fan relay. The A/C switch is an added input on models so equipped. The ECU simultaneously turns "ON" or "OFF" the main radiator fan and A/C auxiliary fan as well as setting them at "HI" or "LO" speed
If they checked the whole system and found no problems, I'd venture to say the probelm is a bad ECU. It must not be shutting the fan off when it's supposed to be off.
