Jeep Cherokee Moonlighting As A Tuna

Q. I have a 1996 Jeep Cherokee Limited with 115,000 miles. The rod leading to the drivers side hood latch broke. The guys at the automotive department of my work spent their lunch hour trying to get it open and had no luck. They took the headlight off and the tire to get to it but had no luck getting to the latch. They can not get to the latches from underneath either.

Jeep Cherokee Moonlighting As A Tuna

They think that the latch has locked up and that is what caused the rod to break. They can get a hold of the rod and pull on it but the latch will not release. They suggested letting them cut the hood off and getting a new one.

I don't know about all of that. What else can I do or suggest to them to do before I let them cut it open like a can of tuna. HELP! It's a car not tuna!!

Not fan of torches,
Megan

A. In 35 years as a mechanic, I have never, ever needed to cut a hood off to get it open. On these if you remove the front grille, you should be able to gain access to the latch and connecting rods.
