Buzzing Altima
Q. Dear Vince, I have a problem with my 1995 Nissan Altima, 2.4 liter 4 cylinder, automatic transmission, 111,000 miles, F/I, P/S, A/C, cruise, rack & pinion.
The problem happened overnight. I tried starting my car and did not start but just made a strange buzzing sound for about 30 seconds and then stopped.
The indication lights in the panel did not show up either. I turned the ignition off than on again & traced the sound coming from the fuel pump relay. It was buzzing & vibrating. I pulled the relays and checked for continuity across the relay control circuit and also verified there was no continuity across the power circuit as the manual suggested. They checked out fine, I even swapped the cooling fan relay with the fuel pump relay (both are same) but there was still the buzzing coming from the really in the fuel pump location. I pulled the relay out and the buzzing went away and I could see the instrument indication lights. I checked the fuel pump fuse it is OK. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
FahimA. I don't think your problem is with the relay or the fuse. I think you have a bad fuel pump. Fortunately it is relatively easy to get to even though it's in the gas tank.
Take out the upper and lower back seat and you will see the pump access cover. Remove the four phillips screws and you will see the top of the tank. The fuel pump electrical connector is right there. Unplug it and try starting the car again. If it cranks over and there is no buzzing, you found the problem. Look at the terminals on the fuel pump cover itself. Quite often they get corroded and break contact.
If not, then you may have a short in the wiring. With the seat out you'll be able to trace the harness pretty easily. There is also the possibility that the ECU ground circuit is bad. This is not very common however. I really do think you have a pump problem.
