Dodge 1500 4x4 Light & Buzzing
Q. I have really enjoyed your site, and have found it beneficial. I do have two additional questions to ask. My first question deals with the transmission or drive train. The truck a 1998 Dodge 1500 4x4, runs excellent. I really got a steal on it. It drives great, and shifts great.
However, when you're driving, and particularly when you slow down, you can hear a spinning/whirling noise, which once the truck is stopped quits. It's almost like a humming noise, as if some lubricant is needed, but I just had the transmission flushed and checked as well as the rear end flushed and checked. No one else seems to be able to hear it, but I can even feel the vibration of the noise, very softly through the floor board. Anyway, tell me what you think.
My second question is, I cannot get the four wheel drive indicator light to go off. I have repaired the 4-wheel vacuum lines as well as the 4-wheel indicator sensor. It will go off if I unplug the sensor, but I need help on getting to the root of the problem. Again the 4-wheel drive works wonderful, a little noisy, but I can't get that light to go off. Tell me what you think
Thanks so much,
JeremyA. If this noise you hear is temperature related, goes away when the transmission warms up, you may have what Chrysler refers to as "transmission regulator valve resonance". The noise is harmless, but it might be loud enough to be annoying.
If the noise is all the time, then I would really have to drive it to make any kind of reasonable diagnosis.
As for the 4WD indicator light. If the transfer case is actually out of 4 WD and the light stays on, then you probably have a sticking indictor switch. It's possible the 4x4 switch itself is bad, but I kind of doubt that.
