Dodge Ram D50 Croaks
Q. Hello, thank you in advance! We have a rather strange problem, couldn't find it anywhere on any web site.

P/S - A/C - Cruise controlOur little truck runs good around town. But as soon as we get on a steep hill we start losing compression. The engine starts backfiring and then slows to around 25 or less. Then the engine will die. Now it dies when you come to a stop also. We are not sure if we should look at the carburetor first or the fuel pump? We have replaced the fuel filter and air filter. Also, sometimes we notice water vapor coming out of the exhaust after running. Any ideas on where we could start? Thank you so very much for your time.
Sincerely,
Ben and PamelaA. First of all, compression doesn't come and go. You either have it or you don't. I think you mean it just loses power going uphill.
I would suggest replacing the fuel pump. At this point it is the most likely culprit. it's very easy to replace and it's not expensive. I'm pretty confident this will solve the problem.
