Volkswagen Jetta Dies When In Gear

Q. Hi Vince, I have a 1996 Volkswagen Jetta 2.0 liter automatic transmission with 195,000 miles. The car starts and idles in park without any problem. However, when I put it in drive or reverse it shakes and eventually stalls. I recently had a similar problem, and Volkswagen dealer said it needed a tune up and throttle body. I then took it to a local mechanic and he changed the spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor and fuel filer.

It ran okay for two weeks and now this stalling has reoccurred.

Thanks,
Frank

A. I have found that what you describe to me is often a sign of a bad PCM. But I suggest having the PCM checked by a Volkswagen dealer before replacing it.

Another possibility is the Multi-function Transmission Range (TR) Switch. The automatic transmission selector lever position is monitored by the PCM. When the selector lever is in a position other than park or neutral, the PCM changes the output signal to the idle stabilizer valve to compensate for the additional load placed on the engine The TR also:.

  • Transmits the selector lever position to the PCM.
  • Switches on the reversing lights.
  • Blocks the starter when a driving range is engaged.
  • Provides information about the switching on and off of the cruise control system.

Another thing to try is to give the Throttle Body and Idle Air Control Valve a good cleaning. My article Cleaning Throttle Bodies will tell you how to do this.

One other possibility is a sticking torque converter clutch. I have seen them stick and stall a vehicle when put into drive. Although it doesn't happen very often, unplugging the transmission connector should clear it up temporarily.

Of course you should check to make sure all the vacuum lines are connected and in good condition as well as checking all the electrical connectors to insure they are clean and tight.
