Cavalier Failed The Test
Q. I have a 1994 Chevy Cavalier with 2.2 liter, 4 cylinder, fuel injection, manual transmission, ABS and 79,000 miles. I must pass an emissions test in order to renew the insurance, but failed recently.
The hydrocarbons and carbons monoxide numbers were higher than allowable. I've also noticed that the timing of the engine seems to be a little faster than normal, both in idle and while running and while driving the engine gets hotter than normal, but not a dangerous level.
I have changed my spark plugs and air filter with no change in the problem. As well this past winter, when I would first start driving it in the morning the idle would be very low (almost stalling out) until the engine warmed up with temperatures only as low as 32 degrees.
Could the two be related? And is there anything I can do myself to repair the problem?
Thank you for any help you may be able to offer,
MichelleA. You may want to check with a dealer for the possibility of this being under their emissions warranty. Don't get your hopes up but it's a possibility. Some had a 8 year or 80,000 mile warranty on catalytic convertors which may be the problem. There are lot's of things that could be wrong. Check fuel pressure? Quality of spark? Carbon build up in cylinders. Is the head gasket leaking coolant outside the engine?
