Saturn SC2 Timing Chain

Q. I drive a 1995 Saturn SC2 with 78,000 miles. It burns a lot of oil, typically 2/3 a quart with each tank of gas. I change my oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. I use Mobil 1 religiously. Do I need to change my timing chain at the suggested interval? Should I have my mechanic check for wear first, then decide, or just change it to avoid any expensive major repairs in the future? How can I tell if my chain is wearing or slipping, etc?

Thank you,
David

A. A timing chain, which is what you have, does not have a change interval. As far as the oil usage, check the PCV system and valve to make sure it's working properly. Also make sure you have no oil leaks.
