Ford Mustang Got The Shakes

Q. My car is a 1993 Ford Mustang LX, It's the 4 cylinder 2.3 liter fuel injection model. It's an Automatic. When I accelerate to about 45 mph there is no problem, the problem is when I let off the gas the car starts jerking violently for a few seconds and then the engine light comes on.

I've had the transmission checked and they said that it was fine. It does the same thing at about 65 mph. The problem isn't constant, sometimes it does it, sometimes it doesn't. Any suggestions on what it could be would be appreciated.

A. It sounds like it could be a Torque Converter Clutch solenoid, or the shift solenoid is sticking. It might also be the transmission filter is partially clogged. There is a plug going into the side of the transmission. Unplug it and drive the car. If the problem has disappeared, you know that is the problem.

In either case replace the filter and fluid. I do not recommend a transmission flush, just replace what came out with the filter.

Ford issued a TSB on a problem that sounds a lot like what you are experiencing. It is Bulletin number 95-23-4, dated 11/20/95. It states:

Torque converter clutch shudder or vibration may occur under light to moderate acceleration above 56 km/h (35 mph) while in 3rd or 4th gear or during 3-4 or 4-3 shifts. This condition may be noticeable on higher mileage vehicles (24,000 km/15,000 miles or more) when the torque converter clutch engages or disengages during light to moderate acceleration.

The repair includes removing the transmission and replacing the torque converter.
