Fluctuating Nissan Hardbody Idle
Q. I have a 2-WD 1997 Nissan Hardbody 4 cylinder, automatic with 60,000 miles on it. When I stop at a light after driving at moderate speeds the engine seems to "burp" it drops and shakes a little and then is fine.
It seems to lose a little power and then shakes and is fine. I have had the plugs, wires, cap fuel and air filter replaced and compression check on the cylinders and nothing had the shop run a full compression test on the truck and they said it should last forever no problems. It runs great better than my 1999 but the idle has me concerned what could cause it that would not show up on any tests? The drop isn't cyclical it is random every few minutes in idle. It only happens when the truck is in gear. In neutral it is a fine smooth idle.
Thanks for the help,
WayneA. It sounds like the Idle Speed Control Valve (IACV-AAC) is starting to go bad. This was a problem with all the 196 and 1997 D21 trucks. There is a test and updated replacement valve. I would suggest having it tested at a Nissan dealer and replaced. It is very possible they will replace it under warranty.
