Pontiac Grand Am ABS Problems??
Q. Hello, I drive a 1993 Pontiac Grand Am, with the 3.3 liter V-6 engine, ABS, A/C, automatic transmission and 118,000 miles. The problem that I am having only occurs on the first stop that I make after starting the car. What happens is that there is a grinding type noise and the brake pedal becomes very stiff and if you press hard enough on it, it will go right to the floor and slams the car to a halt.
From that point on it works fine until the car is shut off and you start it up, engine can be warm or cold, and at the first stop, it will do it again. I have replaced the master cylinder, but it is still happening. Please let me know possible solutions to this. Could it be a sensor or something that causes this?
Thanks,
StaceyA. Stop by a dealer and haver them drive it with you. I think you are describing a normal test that the ABS does on itself to check if all is well in the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS). It runs a self test after every start-up and if it detects a fault it will turn on the ABS warning lamp to let you know that there is a problem.
But, as I said, make sure you take it to a Pontiac Dealer to be safe.
