Ford Explorer Intermittent No Crank

Q. The engine turns over but will not start. This is an intermittent problem. At times you can hear the fuel pump come on when the key is turned on. Naturally the engine will start. Most of the time the fuel pump can not be heard and the engine will not start. I have checked the static fuel pressure at the schrader valve on the fuel rail and it is 38 psi.

Ford Explorer Intermittent No Crank

I have to say the ignition lock cylinder is not in the best condition. The question I have is this; Could the ignition lock cylinder contribute to the fuel pressure relay not receiving a signal which in turn cause the fuel pump not to energize?

This only happens at start up. No problem in the past that would indicate the ignition control module. The vehicle has never shut down or cut out on the road. It seems the fuel pump is not getting energized at start all the time.

Thank you for any input. Randy

A. The bad ignition switch is a definite possibility. I would replace it and that could very well solve the problem.

Before I do that, however, I would put a test light on the fuel pump power wire at the fuel pump connector. If there is no power when you start it, that makes a strong case for the bad ignition switch.
