Used Toyota Camry Problem?
Q. I recently test drove a 1988 Toyota Camry 145,000 miles. Everything else with the car seemed to be okay, however the overdrive seems to let go to 40 miles per hour and then you feel it drift or pull with it off it allowed you to go to 40 miles per hour and the rpm would be at 4,000 then drop off. Is this an easy fix and expensive or should I walk away from it. The seller is willing to let the car go for $700.00. Look forward in hearing from you soon.
A. I never recommend anyone buy a vehicle that is exhibiting signs of transmission trouble. Transmission problems have a way of becoming major problems very quickly.
If you really want the car, ask the owner to change the transmission fluid and filter and then drive it. If it is just a clogged filter the problem will go away. If not, you go away.
