Escort Won't Go Fast

Q. 1993 Ford Escort 1.9. When I floor the gas pedal it misses, if I push gas ½ or ¾ the car is fine. It won't hardly get over 70 miles an hr. I have cleaned all the sensor plugs. Helped a little but didn't solve the problem. any advice will be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Alan

A. It sounds like you have a bad Throttle Position Sensor. (TPS) When you fully depress the gas pedal, the TPS sends a Wide Open Throttle (WOT) signal to the computer and tells it that you want to go very fast very quickly. If this portion of the TPS goes bad, and it does, then the computer does not know you are at WOT.

To accurately test it, you need a scan tool, but from what you describe, I think that is the problem.
