Dodge Grand Caravan Blows Dash Fuse
Q. Vincent, My dad owns a 1996 Dodge Grand Caravan, 3 liter V-6, automatic, 90,000 miles. He has taken this vehicle in for service several times because the fuse for the dash lights keeps blowing. They have repeatedly told him nothing is wrong and just change the fuse. The only aftermarket work done to this vehicle is it had an alarm installed with a remote starter.
I just wondering if you had any suggestions on what could be causing this problem.
Regards,
MarkA. All things being equal, I would have to state the obvious, there is a short in the dash light system. But with an aftermarket alarm system, all things are not equal.
In this case I think the key to finding the problem is in when the fuse blows. I would assume the technician would have put a new fuse in and turned on the lights. If the fuse blew at that time, it would be a fairly simple matter to track the short down. But evidently it didn't, so it may be safe to assume the short is not in the dash light circuit.
But, if the fuse blows when you turn on the alarm, then it's a pretty good bet the problem is in the alarm system. In that case you would need to take it to the shop that installed the alarm.
Without the alarm, the problem could be a bad instrument cluster PC board, bad Body Control Module or in the wiring itself.
