Tempo Heater Control Panel

Q. Hi, We have a 1991 Ford Tempo that only sends air out of the defroster vents. We suspect a disconnected vacuum hose, but cannot seem to get the control panel off. Help!!! Any ideas will be used promptly.

Thanks,
Mike and Donna

A. Before I go taking out the control panel, I would check the vacuum lines and the vacuum tank for leaks and proper connections. The vacuum line goes from the intake manifold to check valve. It splits out of the check valve, one line to the vacuum tank and the other to the control panel.

If you still have to remove the control panel, what you need to do is get a couple of 3.0 millimeter rods (6" long piece of coat hanger works well) and insert them into 3.5 millimeter holes in bezel. Apply a minimal inboard force to each side of the control, then pull control assembly from register.
