Volkswagen Jetta Brake Lights Stay On

Q. Hello sir, I have a 1999 Volkswagen Jetta GLS. 2.0 liter 5 speed with 102,000 miles with ABS. I noticed tonight that my brake lights stayed on after the car was off. I checked the brake pedal and noticed that it seemed to have dropped a "notch" keeping the brake lights on. If I put my foot under the pedal and raise it, the lights went off.

As soon as I released, the pedal dropped and the lights went back on. I have to put a brick under the pedal tonight until I can get someone to look at it. Any ideas as to why this is happening?

Thank you,
John

Adjusting Brake Light Switch:

  • Remove brake light switch to adjust.
  • Remove driver's side storage shelf.
  • Remove connector from brake light switch.
  • Remove brake light switch by turning to right 90°.
  • Pull brake light switch out.
  • Press brake pedal down as far as possible by hand.
  • Guide brake light switch through opening and turn 90° left when installing.
  • Release brake pedal.
  • Connect brake light switch connector.
  • Install driver's side storage shelf.
  • Operate brake pedal.
  • Brake lights illuminate.
  • Remove foot from brake pedal.
  • Brake lights must not illuminate.
