Avalon Remote Control

Q. I just bought a 1996 Toyota Avalon XLS, it came with the keyless entry key fob. The batteries were dead so I went to the local Radio Shack and put in new batteries. I now have to hold the lock button or trunk button on the fob for 30 seconds for it to do anything and the unlock feature is inop. All other lock functions with key and door panel buttons function correctly.

Toyota says it needs to be reprogrammed? Any Ideas?

Thank you in advance,
Eric

A. If you bought the car from a dealer it should be their responsibility to fix it for you, if it's from a private owner, you may be stuck with the job.

We have several possibilities, were the correct batteries put in? Maybe the remote itself is no good and the previous owner didn't want to buy a new one because he was getting rid of the car. ($70-80) Once the alarm computer is programmed for a remote it should not forget the frequency of that remote. All remote frequencies are different and the computer can be programmed for up to five different remotes.

It could also be a malfunction in the car's alarm system causing the trouble, not the remote. If it's a Toyota factory alarm, your dealer is the best qualified to trouble shoot it for you, they can check all these possibilities.
