Olds Cutlass Cruiser Idles High
Q. Hello; my 1989 Olds Cutlass Cruiser, 3.3 liter, fuel-injection, automatic transmission, 129,000 miles. The check engine light comes on at times, but never when I'm at a place to pull a code down. Some times when you start the car it has high rpm's. If you turn it off and let it set for a minute, restart, it runs okay. At other times it stalls when you slow down or stop.
I had the car to my mechanic and to an Olds dealer. They had no luck finding the problem. They said they had to have the check engine light come on to pull down the code problem. I did replace the coolant temperature sensor, since I got the car back from the garage. Problems are the same.
My son-in-law thinks it could be the idle air control valve. My brother thinks it could be the 02 sensor. The car is show room new, body wise; no rust or dents and the car has been serviced by the book. I do not want to put parts into the car if not needed; as I just retired and each dollar counts. Any help I would appreciate.
Thanks in advance,
PhilA. See if the dealer will give you a loaner car while they "play" with it. If a good tech is allowed to drive it a couple of days, he may experience the problem and be able to fix it for you.
