Chrysler LHS Shifts To Neutral Hot

Q. Recently when reaching a speed of 30 to 40 mph my car will shift into neutral. I then shift to THIRD and then FIRST, but it will still not engage into drive. It will back up when put into reverse, but will still not go into drive. I turn the car off and let it sit for 30 minutes to one hour and it will then drive perfectly.

It has no problem shifting into all gears once it has cooled down. I took it to a transmission shop and they pulled the pan and changed the filter. Said it was clean and they did not know what the problem was. They thought it might be electrical. Took it to a mechanic and he had no idea. Please help.

  • 1994 Chrysler LHS
  • 3.5 liter Fuel injected V-6
  • Automatic transmission
  • 91,000 miles
  • ABS brakes
  • P/S, A/C, Cruise control

Thank you...

A. First thing to do is check for cut wires in the area shown below. If there is, then they will need to be repaired and that will probably fix the problem. If they are not cut, but show signs of chaffing, then the harness bracket needs to be replaced with a new harness bracket, Chrysler part number 4604744, after repairing the harness.

In addition there was a recall on the Transmission Wiring Harness. You should check to see if this recall was done. If not, you will need to make arrangements to have it done. Call your local Chrysler Dealer, have the VIN when you call, and they can check to see if it was done.

Then you should see if there are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes stored in the computer. If there are they will give you a good idea of what is going on.

Chrysler transmissions are very fussy about the transmission fluid. They must have the Mopar ATF Type 7176 +3 fluid or the transmission will not work correctly. I would let the Chrysler dealer do a transmission fluid change using the correct type fluid.
