Kicking Mazda

Q. Hi Vincent, The car has a kicks every couple of minutes when I am driving it. The kick is slight and comes from the engine. It affects the acceleration slightly. I thought that it could be the contact point is rusty and perhaps not efficient.

Do you think I am right and if so where is the contact point on the MX3 and could change it myself or am I better off going to a mechanic.

1992 Mazda MX3
4 Cylinder, 1.6 liter engine
Automatic transmission
220,000 kilometers
Fuel Injection

Your tips are always helpful.
Sincerely,
Arash

A. If you mean the ignition points, then no, that car doesn't have points.

This could be difficult to find. First thing I would do is see if any codes are stored in the computer. See my Trouble Shooting section for information on how to retrieve and interpret the codes. That will give us a good starting place to look for the problem.

If there are no codes, a technician will have to drive it with a scan tool connected to see what is causing the kick. I would think the Throttle Position Sensor could be at fault here.
