Ford Bronco II Torque Converter Cheat

Q. Hi Vince, I have a 1984 Ford Bronco II, 2.8 liter engine, carburetor and C5 automatic transmission Ser # RF-E 2AP-7006-AA. With a 4x 4 Borg-Warner transfer case. I had to replace the flywheel ( flex plate )as it shattered around the centre. There is no drain plug on the torque converter so this really adds to the weight. I have to reinstall this transmission by hand as I cannot find a transmission jack.

Ford Bronco II Torque Converter Cheat

My question is; can I install the torque converter first making sure that the pump rod is seated in the transmission and then install the transmission? The book suggests NO! I just think the lift would be easier.

Thanks for any help or suggestions that you may have...

A. The book says NO for a very good reason. The chances of breaking the input shaft is significant and you'll have a hell of a time lining up the splines. Besides, the weight of five quarts of ATF is not going to make much difference in the weight of the whole assembly. And most of that you can drain out of the torque converter.
