Pulsar Blowing and Smoking

Q. Hello there! I have an 1988 Nissan Pulsar NX, 1.6 liter with an automatic transmission. The car smokes like the Batmobile and drinks transmission fluid quicker than "wine-o" with a bottle of Mad Dog. The engine isn't even a year old and the transmission was used. My neighbor mentioned a "modulator valve"?

Thanks,
Jim

A. Well, the transmission modulator is the prime candidate for the cause of your problem. Transmission fluid can be sucked into the engine through a bad modulator. The only flaw here is that your car doesn't have one.

Since that is the only way transmission fluid can get into the engine, I don't think the two problems are related. With this engine and transmission, I think the most likely cause of your problem is leaking axle seals in the transmission and a blown head gasket. Neither of which is really difficult to replace and both are common problems with this car.

Those would be the first things I would check.
