Taurus Transmission Problem

Q. Hi! I have some questions regarding my car.

1991 Ford Taurus, 3.0, V-6, automatic transmission, over 140,000 miles, A/C, cruise control, and power steering.

The question that I have is sometimes the reverse will not work and then I will have to wait for a little while and then it will kick in. You never know when it is going to happen it will just not go into gear. Do you know what could be causing that? Also, I just had my car in the shop and got a bunch of things done to it, not sure exactly. Boy Friends Dad brought it in for me, got new struts I know- but now when I am stopped at a stop light and try to take off on green it feels like it won't take off as good as it used to.

You can hear it rev up and it won't go that well and then it will kick in. And also when I am on the highway now, after I hit 65 or 70 mph the car starts shaking and I have to slow down to make it stop. Do you know what these problems could be from? Do you think it has anything to do with the transmission? I don't know anything really about cars - what do you do if the transmission does go out? Are you suppose to get a new one at a certain time? We got this car from a aunt and I don't think she really did much of anything to the car.

Thank you so much for your time!
Camilla

A. Camilla, I'm afraid you have a transmission problem. You describe the symptoms of a worn out transmission. I would suggest at this point to have a transmission fluid and filter change to eliminate the possibility of a clogged transmission filter. If that doesn't help, then it's got to come out and be rebuilt.

Wish I had better news for you.
