Sundance EGR Valve

Q. Hello, I have a 1989 Plymouth Sundance, 2.5 engine, 5 speed manual transmission. I have diagnosed the problem finally of having a bad EGR value which causes my car to misfire in first, second and third gears when the engine is hot. The valve is stuck in the up position all the time.

Did a code check and come up with misfiring and this seems to be the problem. A new one costs $61.00 and I was wondering is there any way that I could clean it out by blowing air through it or any other means. Is there any good way to clean this valve out???? Thank you in advance and by the way I love your site, great for someone like me who knows very little about cars.

A. You can try cleaning out the EGR valve galleys and the passages in the manifold and see if that helps. The junk builds up pretty thick and heavy so compressed air won't do too much. I use drill bits of various sizes to clean out the passages. I also do it by hand to avoid damaging the valve or the intake. Most times this works but some manifolds have the passages taking some turns and this id not effective. So I get a little creative using whatever I can to clean them out.

But from what you describe the valve itself is locked up and I never had too much success in repairing them permanently. I think in the long run your best bet is to just replace it.
