Jetta Ignition Switch

Q. Hello, I have a faulty ignition switch in my 1995 Volkswagen Jetta, and I am wondering what the procedure is for installing a new one. Can you give me some direction?

Thank you,
Paul

A. It can be a little involved, I don't know what your skill level is, so look over the procedure and if you think you can handle it, go for it.

Removing:
  • Remove steering wheel.
  • Remove switch securing screws.
  • Disconnect switch connectors.
  • Remove turn signal and windshield wiper/washer switch from steering column.
  • Remove washer, spring and support ring from steering column
  • Remove mounting bolt and remove steering lock housing
Installing:
  • Slide steering lock housing onto steering column and install mounting bolt
  • Install support ring, spring and washer onto steering column
  • Using special tool VW 420, drive support ring, spring and washer onto steering column until fully seated.

NOTE: If the steering column shaft recedes into steering column tube, thread nut onto shaft and pull shaft out.

To replace the switch itself:
  • Remove steering lock housing. (See above.)
  • Remove screw attaching ignition switch to lock housing assembly.
  • Remove ignition switch.
  • Reverse procedure to install.

If the car has a SRS airbag, I would recommend having a professional do this since accidental deployment is a possibility.
